Thanks for the take on this. I think sometimes following the "Write What You Know" advice produces great books. When writers delve into aspects they are familiar with and add them to their stories, that can make the stories feel more real. Taken too far, the advice can definitely hamper stories. Some of my favorite books would not exist if the authors had only written "what they knew."
